How to choose the right tank level indicator

A plain-language explanation of how float and gauge board level indicators work, and what to weigh when choosing between the FBS and FB Proline systems for water, fuel and chemical tanks.

How a float and board indicator works

  1. 1A stainless steel float rides on the surface of the liquid inside the tank, rising and falling with it.
  2. 2Guide wires keep the float on its path and carry its movement to the top of the tank.
  3. 3The pulley elbow mounted on the tank rim passes the wire out of the tank.
  4. 4A clear pointer on the gauge board mounted on the tank wall shows the liquid level instantly — no power, no screens, no software.

What to weigh when choosing

Tank height

The FBS system covers tanks up to 15 m, and FB Proline serves tanks up to 25 m with a wider gauge board readable from further away.

The stored liquid

Water, oils, fuel and various chemicals; the materials touching the liquid — SS303 or SS316 floats — are chosen once the liquid and its conditions are known.

Readability

A 100 mm aluminium gauge board on FBS, or 150 mm on FB Proline where the board is read from a distance or from height.

Site conditions

Extreme heat, dust and coastal humidity shape the choice of enclosures, covers and weather-resistant accessories.

Tank level gauge fluid compatibility

LiquiLevel tank level indicators are compatible with the following fluids when configured with suitable wetted materials. Float options include ECTFE Coated SS316.

  • Methanol
  • Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)
  • Triethylene Glycol (TEG)
  • Hydrochloric Acid (up to 37%)
  • Sulfuric Acid (up to 98%)
  • Sodium Hypochlorite (12% to 15%)
  • Sodium Hydroxide (up to 50%)
  • Ferric Chloride
  • Hexane
  • Diesel
  • Kerosene
  • Jet A-1
  • Formaldehyde (up to 40%)
  • Acetic Acid
  • Formic Acid

Compatibility depends on the correct float, coating and wetted materials. Give our engineers the fluid concentration and operating temperature to confirm the configuration; not every material suits every listed fluid.

Before you request a quote

  • Tank height and diameter, in centimetres or metres.
  • The stored liquid and its temperature.
  • Where the gauge board will be mounted and how far it must be read from.
  • How many systems you need and any spare parts to hold in stock.
  • A tank drawing or layout if you have one — attach it to your request.

Frequently asked questions

Does the level indicator need power?

No. The system is fully mechanical and works with the float and gauge board — no power supply, screens or software.

What is the maximum supported tank height?

FBS reaches up to 15 m, and FB Proline covers tanks up to 25 m.

Can it be fitted to an existing tank?

Yes. The slotted channel and tee nut fixing system needs no drilling into the tank wall, so it suits existing tanks.

What does the warranty cover?

Lifetime warranty on key components, including the level indicator, subject to routine yearly maintenance checks.

Do you ship to my country?

We ship worldwide from Sweden, and you can request a technical quote directly on the site.
